Busch Gardens Williamsburg announced over the weekend their plans for the park over the next two years. In 2011 BGW will add Mach Tower, an drop tower ride standing 246 feet tall as part of a major overhaul to the Oktoberfest area of the park, which will also see a new beer garden and pretzel bakery added. It sounds like this may be a Gyro Drop style tower as the seats will rotate around the tower as you go up. They promise some “special surprises at the top” of the tower ever, but wouldn’t say more. According to this video interview sent to us by a reader and posted at BGWFans, the ride will not be an Intamin but rather a Moser Ride from Italy.
Form the artwork shown in the preview video (embedded below) the tower doesn’t seem to have any themeing at all, so I’m really disappointed with this entire Mach Tower concept as it seems pointless. Kings Dominion has had a bigger version of the same basic ride concept less than an hour away since 2003. I’d much rather had something smaller and indoor, or something with a castle theme and a couple of S&S Space Shots instead. BGW is just a bit too late to be entering the Drop Tower wars at this stage in the game.
